Surely, Allah loves not aggressors.” According to the Odu Ifa, Orunmila says, “One who can neither fight nor talk cannot live long on Earth. Fighting can bring wealth and honor.” These seems to indicate religion supports fighting and self-defense. Some say 52 Blocks evolved within American prisons during the 1970s in response to overcrowding and gang violence. Without access to typical martial arts training, prisoners supposedly developed a self-defense system involving 52 “blocks” or defenses against common street attacks. Others say 52 does NOT refer to how many defenses are in the system but instead is based on a card game called “52 Pickup.” A few say it is based on the Supreme Mathematics of the Five Percent Nation of Gods and Earths and that 5 (Culture/Refinement) + 2 (Wisdom) = 7 (God). And many others suggest 52 Blocks has older roots in African fighting arts, brought to America through the slave trade. However, clear historical evidence supporting any of these narratives is lacking. Is “Jailhouse Rock” and 52 Blocks the same? What about “Alto,” from Georgia? In this episode of Warrior Class, the Instructors will discuss the origins, techniques and effectives of 52 Blocks and break down its major styles and reveal its most revered instructors and practitioners.
